BLOG TASK: WEEK 9 – REFLECTION ON DESIGNS

Seeing the designs of other students made me realize how high the standard is. Many students have very impressive designs and some of them look very professional. I especially like Huss design which look sleek, has great colour palette and interesting layout. Although I do not like so much retro style, Kate managed to design her portfolio in very classical way with clever solutions for showing her work. Another design which has drawn my attention was Adams – looking very complicated to code- good luck with that, because if he will manage to execute all his ideas, he will have very impressive website. I like also designs of Zach and Rakeem.

There were designs which definitely need some improvements on layout and navigation. Having feedback on the designs was very helpful and I have decided to improve mine as well – I will change the layout a bit – for example place the navigation on top right side instead of right bottom. I think it will be better for the future and adding other work. I have to work on my background as well as white colour seems too bare, there will be too much empty space as well. After talking to David I am thinking of adding discreet wallpaper made from my logo. Overall, there is a lot work in front of everybody in order to execute their complex ideas.

BLOG TASK – WEEK 7: REFLECTION ON RESEARCH/ DESIGN PROCESS, DEVELOPING HTML AND CSS

My research regarding web designs is going quite well. Seeing other people work – professionals and amateurs – helped me a lot with developing my own style and give me many ideas on which elements should be included on the portfolio website. There are many possibilities for a layout and some of them are very interesting. The one which are most attractive to me are the cartoon style designs like Alex Dukal site (I linked it previously).

Design process is taking a lot of time and it is hard to decide which layout, colours, font etc. work the best. It is good to have a feedback from friends and tutors and apply it to the design. Transforming the design to HTML and CSS takes definitely a lot of time, much more than expected actually. It is different story to sit with David in class- doing everything step by step where everything works how it supposed to- and sit alone at home with a book and internet to solve your problems. My weakness is lack of knowledge of the code and not being aware of the possibilities it gives. Reading and learning about HTML and CSS definitely helps a lot and it easier to apply it to the coding.

My strength is my design – hopefully. My weakness is, definitely, writing about my work – as usual- especially writing ‘about me’ page. I enjoy practice much more.

I have to do much more reading and tutorials to feel comfortable and certain while creating websites. Practice makes perfect. A lot of work in front of me – but enjoyable work I think. And the results are the reward for long hours trying to figure out why the size of the text doesn’t want to change.. ;)

BLOG TASK – WEEK 5: THOUGHTS CONCERNING MY PORTFOLIO SITE

The style I had decided to use in my portfolio website is simple, colourful and someone could say a bit childish – with cute drawings as navigation and my tag name as repetitive element in the design.

I will use colours I have used in my tag name design. I want the website to be bright and colourful but in the same time not too overpowering so I will keep white background for other elements to stand out.

My idea for layout is to have the navigation on the top right corner on each site excluding the home page, one division with the thumbnails of my work/video and one division box with description. There will be lite box appearing in order to see larger images. About me page will have one big division in order to fit all text and pictures without need to scroll.

Overall I would like to keep all the content visible on one site, I might need to change it in the future when where will be more projects to show – especially with video screen taking quite a lot of space.

The design is one element- is transforming it to html and css what worries me the most. Cause solving one problem can take few precious hours. When I am stuck on something I try to search it on the web and fortunately I am not the only one with my concerns. There are a lot of tutorials and forums helping with solving the issues. This is my first website design and by having to execute my ideas I learn a lot and hopefully it will be much easier in the future.

10 Steps To The Perfect Portfolio Website

“You may have a personal portfolio website for a number of reasons. If you’re a freelancer, then you’d need one to showcase your work and allow people to contact you. If you’re a student (or unemployed), then you’d need one to show prospective employers how good you are and what you can do, so that they might hire you. If you’re part of a studio, then you might use one to blog about your design life, show people what you’re doing and build your online presence.

A personal portfolio website is all about promoting you. You are a brand, and your name is a brand name. No one is going to know about your brand unless you get it out there; and if you’re a Web designer, developer, writer, gamer or any other type of creative, then it’s essential that you have a good portfolio website.”

This website shows 10 steps to create good portfolio website such as:

1. LOGO –the first thing user sees.

2. TAGLINE –summarising what you do.

3. PORTFOLIO – including your work and short description.

4. SERVICES- breaking down what services you offer.

5. ABOUT ME- let people know who you are.

6. CONTACT- one of the most important elements.

7. BLOG- show that you know what you talking about.

8. CALL TO ACTION- hire me!!!

9. USE SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITES- encourage people to follow you on other websites.

10. LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION- be personal, friendly, clear and professional.

Very good tips and supported by examples. Check it out yourself on the actual website.

40 Cool Website Design Ideas You Should Check

“There is more to web design that meets the eye, but honestly, would you not like it to be a little creative, too? Content and substance definitely are important, however let us not forget the importance of creative web designs in getting and retaining readership. Many people never thought that great content and great web design are possible together. Well, it is more than possible now.

The world wide web has definitely turned into a more colorful and exciting virtual world to surf, what with unique designs that just get better and better as time passes by. At present, there are a lot great designs out there that you need to check. In fact, we have collected 40 great looking designs that you should not miss. Enjoy these cool and creative web design ideas!”

I found this website very inspiring for my design. It presents some very creative designs where content is as important as design of the page. The ‘cool’ and contemporary designs draw our attention and cause we want to check out the website, while websites full of text just seem boring and  not attractive. I hope I have managed to achieve the ‘cool’ effect with my portfolio design.

PASSION PAGE

I am glad to present my Passion Page: ‘ MINIONS’.  Development of the website, although partly crated by David already, was more difficult than suspected. The reasons were on one hand that it was already partly built by someone else and I had to look a bit for the parts which meant to be changed, and on the other hand there were small details which took time to put the way I wanted. The process of changing the template in Photoshop was fairly easy despite the fact of difficulty of finding good resolution pictures. I decided to put them in the grid which I think is suitable for the design of this particular website.

Next came the change of text in the body of website which wasn’t difficult except of maybe the lack of information about the Minions, but I decided to present  more by adding the links to the short videos featuring them. The change of colour scheme was definitely important for a design and I decided to go with the colours which best fit the characters- blue and yellow. The worst nightmare was with finding out how to put 3 pictures next to each other and stop them to appear vertically, and after thinking that I have achieved success – apparently not in Mozilla Firefox as I found out in the class.

What I have learnt from the experience is whatever you want to achieve with your website is definitely doable – you just have to research it properly. The other thing is MAKE SURE YOU TEST IT on as many browsers you can so you won’t have any surprises.

I really enjoyed doing the Passion Page website and in my humble opinion it went quite well.

The other student’s Passion Pages went really well as well with exceptions of few forgetting to put their images in the root folder or messing up something in CSS which was after hard to locate.   I was definitely impressed by Kate’s design and tricks that she used. I also liked designs of Rakeem and Huss.
